Reading Rainbow iPad App Brings Audio Storytelling to Life

Then The Big Folk Arrived in IrelandReading Rainbow and its genteel host LeVar Burton have been identified with audio storytelling for kids for many years. Now a new iPad app (released June 19th 2012) brings the attractive package home to a new generation of kids aged 3 – 9.

Reading Rainbow is a free download, but access to the full library of 150 interactive books (more added regularly), 16 video “field trips”, customized recommendations for each child, and other extended features requires a monthly ($9.95/month) or semi-annual ($29.95) subscription.

What do you get for this admittedly steep price?

Your child will be invited to discover a whole fascinating world of quality fiction and non-fiction books, traveling to themed islands such as My Friends, My Family, Animal Kingdom, and Genius Academy.

The tablet pages are designed with animations and other subtle interactions that entertain without distracting from the story. A parent dashboard allows you to track your child’s progress. You will also find discussion topics under “Family Reading Time”, that will guide you to talk with your child about what they have been reading.

If you prefer to try before you buy, you can select a free book and view introductory videos without a subscription.
